MFW: Trend Mash Up

As we head into the heart of Paris Fashion Week it's time to look back and review its more risqué sister Milan Fashion Week, home to ostentation and excess at its best. And this season, Italy's fashion big boys decided to own Autumn's most archetypal palettes: jewel colours and earthy tones. This year it's all about rust and Quality Street. They may have re-visited a trend but MFW is no shrinking violet (cough cough), with the likes of Roberto Cavalli providing a generous helping of texture and pattern to his jewel interpretations for a Cavalli sealed stamp of flamboyance.

In the other corner we had rust. From outerwear to never-ending thigh highs (this is Italy after all) this trend was covered by the likes of Prada, Emilio Pucci and Gucci. A common trait? Texture. From Wild West suedes, to crumpled crepes and furs. This tried and tested Autumn/ Winter trend was reworked for an even earthier edge.

Any newcomers? Inventive outwear with Fendi's eccentric fur numbers revisiting the 60s with strips of neon and fringing at its most eccentric. Sportmax also pushed the boundaries with its fur check number.

What we learnt: jewel colours and earthy tones are here to stay and fur isn't always about ostentation, it can have fun every now and then.

Trendoscope: LFW Pretty in Pink

Who said candy hues couldn't be sophisticated? Especially pink. Topshop Unique and Roksanda Ilincic  show us how to take the hue from your childhood bedroom to your current wardrobe. Feeling a little sickly? Hop over to the Rocha household, where it's all about channelling the right amount of pepto.

Trendoscope: LFW Spiced Umber

Another Autumn/Winter, another collection of trends revamped and this year we're introduced to claret's moody step sister.  Meet spiced umber. Is she brown or is she red? Earthy or infernal? Finished off with a slap of leather and ragged appliqué, word on the Frow is that she's the lovechild of AW's most reworked trends, gothic chic and jewel colour.

Trendoscope: NYFW Colour Poppin

As New York Fashion Week draws to a close, it's time to look over the micro-trend that's taking AW dressing by surprise. Icy citrus colour pops have sneaked themselves into our wardrobes to come. But this isn't like your sherbet hue dressing that we see so often during the summer. For AW13, colour pop is at its sneakiest, poking out at the collar and the ankle. That citrus shirt you wore last summer? Hold onto it for AW13 and layer it beneath a chunky knit, collar and cuffs at the ready. With AW13 sorted,  check out which NY designers did it best.

Trendoscope: The Stripped Back Sandal

This style has slowly made its way onto the highsteet and is now all-over shop ready to take on SS13. Filtered from those barely there transparent Louboutins, donned by the likes of Beyonce to Kimmy K and dominated by Guiseppe Zanotti with a hint of Kanye, this look is stripped back with toe-cleavage by the plenty. Think minimal, think citrus pops (unless those Guiseppes are burning a hole in your pocket) and you're on the right lines.
